Gay priests are rarely ever depicted in a positive light. Often thought of as monsters and perverts, society has ignored the pain and suffering of men whose feelings of attraction and love are condemned by the faith they believe in. Adam, a surprisingly hip priest that enjoys morning runs with his iPod, leads a church in a small Polish town. Though loved by his community, Adam must struggle every day with repressing his feelings for other men, for if he is found out, he runs the risk of being transferred to another town, or worse, losing his priesthood.
Directed by Malgorzata Szumowska, In the Name Of is a beautiful film with a compelling and sensitive story. Gorgeous shots of the Polish landscape and countryside treat the eye, as intense storytelling and dialogue tug at the heartstrings and provoke the mind. This film demands that the overlap of homosexuality and religion no longer be ignored, and that gay priests not be thought of as monsters, but as real and fallible humans who just like everybody else, want to feel love.
