
This poignant documentary offers startling depth to a murder by a male student of his 8th grade classmate, who identifies as transgendered/gay/gender non-conforming. Valentine Road director Marta Cunningham dives into the story of the 2008 murder of the 8th-grader Lawrence “Larry” King and his killer Brandon McInerney with unprecedented intimacy, skill and creativity forcing the viewer to feel and experience both sides of this heartbreaking tale—from friends of the killed, to the family of the killer, to jurors and those who played a role in the court proceedings. Valentine Road offers more than provide a portrait of a crime and a trial, this film explores the politics of gender as well as motives for freedom of expression and the state of the justice system today. Valentine Road reminds that although heterosexism and homophobia contribute to atrocities, but we each have a powerful voice in standing against discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation.
